General Comments

We chose BUPA international as our health insurance in Switzerland. In this country health insurance is mandatory and most people have to go with a Swiss company. However, as we are expats we could subscribe with BUPA.

Throughout the period where we have been insured, almost every single call to customers service ended up being fruitless. Every time the representative says he will act on the request and does not. For example, my wife wanted a claim form because she needed to call a doctor for an emergency and the BUPA web site was down. So she called and asked to have the form sent to her... It never arrived. After 1 hour we called again, and this time it was sent. Many instances of such problems happened.

The biggest problem occurred with the coverage of the maternity. We subscribed to the lifeline gold coverage in order to satisfy the requirements from the Swiss government to cover basic treatments such as birth. However, even though the pregnancy was without complications, we went to a public hospital without any options (such as single room etc.), the expenses were over the limit by 3000Frcs (About 1300 Pounds) as they had a limit of 4000 Pounds. Ironically, they upped the limit to 5000 Pounds, but it is valid only after renewal of the policy, which in our case happened in January (3 weeks after the birth).

Altogether, BUPA lifeline gold is not sufficient for Switzerland!!

The reason I am writing this review is because BUPA is leading people to believe that their coverage is enough for normal expenses when it is not. I wonder what would have happened if the pregnancy had been with complications!!
On a side annoying note, I did refer a friend and never saw the referral "gift", which is another demonstration of their inefficiency.
