FRANKO's review of Pug

“Don't get me wrong - I love my Pugs but they a...”

★★★☆☆

Good Points
Very cute, mischievious and funny as well as affectionate. Full of beans. Everyone admires them. They're great with kids because they love kids.

Bad Points
They spend a lot of time barking at (A) the TV and (B) absolutely nothing. They are nearly impossible to train and will not heel when called. The are not "bidable": i.e they seldom do as you bid them. They are prone to getting ill, cannot be left outside in anything but dry, mild weather. They will never attain "road sense". Their colds are easily caught and can restrict breathing so much that you wonder if they're goingto keel over and die. Possibly the daftest dog ever - scatter brained in the extreme.

General Comments
Don't get me wrong - I love my Pugs but they a handful: they took eight months to toilet train. They will never attain "road sense" so they must always be on a laoise. They will not come over when called unless there is food is involved which is very annoying (esp. in situations where you can forsee disaster befalling them if they do not obey you). These animals watch TV and think it is a portal to another reality. They will bark incessantly at images and sounds of wildlife (either / or). With the sound muted they will still bark at wildlife images on TV. They also recognise cartoon dogs as dogs and even that car advert where the Renault Scenic is portrayed as a dog gets them going. Soooooo many movies and commercials have adverts that feature a background noise of a dog barking. Pugs will pick this up no matter how faint the sound and will begin barking for ten minutes at the TV. These dogs are prone to illness to the extent that they need all of the care and pamering you would afford a human baby so they are not a prospect for an impatient owner. Pug mothers often need caesarians and often fail to lactate hence having no milk for suckling. After birth many pug mothers have little interest in their young so pug puppies must be taken care of by humans in the first three months or they would otherwise die of neglect. They are very affectionate and sensitive. They are not hardy enough for kennels as they are prone to catching illnesses from other dogs and get depressed and afraid in kennels. The experience really shakes them up. I'd love to leave mine in kennels periodically but it's cruel to leave a pug in kennels. You have to be a fanatical animal lover to adopt one of these as they are a hell of a lot of work. Contrary to many owners reports they love going for walks. I walk mine twice a day and it's the highlight of their existences. Two miles is about right - they'll collapse after 4 miles (and you have to carry them home) and can't walk that far at all in extreme heat due to breathing difficulties. They're not keen on water or swimming but they're very easy to wash if you have a bath at home as they cannot get out! There's a Buddhist precept which says that one should have sympathy for all sentient beings - Buddhist or not, if you believe this then you'll be a good pug owner - anything less and they'll try your patience to distraction!
