oniko's review of Canon 420EX EOS

“The Canon 420EX EOS is the new series of the canon...”

★★★★☆

Good Points
This flash will give a fast sync at all speeds for fill-in flash.

As well as wireless control and has a built in slave for remotely firing the flash

Bad Points
It is auto only and cannot be used manually.

General Comments
The Canon 420EX EOS is the new series of the canon flash, it has all the good points that the older EZ range had.

The wide range lenses coverage of the motorised zoom head and powerfull flash is still there with a few more goodies added.

It now has 4 channels so that you can use a master flash on or off the camera to fire other flashs in series.

This is used for studio work and nature work.

It also has a slave unit built in, so now you can use two or more flashes to light both sides of a subject.

Say for example full power in the front and say 1/2 to 1/4 as a hair light or to light up backround or other subjects to give more depth to your flash work.

It is a flash for the "A" cameras which means it has ETTL which give you flash at all speeds with these types of cameras which is great for fill in flash and for fast high speed indoor sports.

Most people strobe them to keep up with the motordrives of the cameras.

You loose a lot of power in GN but as say in basketball you will be near the hoop anyway. So the lack of distance will not matter so much.

The flash is auto only so any controling will have to used on the camera only.

Overall it is a solid feeling and well built flash. Up to canons usual high standards.
