Good Points

They look quite sporty with the standard wheel arch extenstions and side skirts. The are almost as quick as my XR2 (Tuned to 115bhp) and cheaper to run and insure, which is very expensive for younger drivers.

Bad Points

Where do I start? Leaks, water (from outside in) Oil (From the inside out). Head gasket failure . Intermittent electrical faults - many of. Loads of tiny dents everywhere in the body work - very noticable on a clean car on a sunny day. Many sufferd at the hand of boy racers. Nackerd suspension mainly front dampers.

General Comments

I purchased a lovely example only a week ago. The test drive was fine , the car had some money spent on it . In the form of multispoke alloys , piper X filters, Piper exhaust, lowering springs, Paddle clutch, Big valve head and of course a high lift cam.
The drive home: It cut out at idle, or to be more precise anywhere near a junction. The standard brakes are terrible. They rattle and not just rattles there is other noises I can't account for yet? The petrol gauge lies, go round a corner at any reasonable speed and the needle jumps up and down like a kangaroo.
Arrive Home (25 miles later) Give the new car a thorough inspection - Central locking on passenger door not working, window washers not working, only half of the rear screen demists, head lamps and front + side indicators work occasonally, fan control only works on full blast, leaking front shocker, rust behind filler cap, driving lamps in bumper don't work and very corroded.
2 Days later. 11:56pm Driving home from work. No power, it starts slowing down, temperature gauge in the red, engine cuts out and car come to a halt. Head gasket gone - lots of milky oil.
DO NOT BUY AN AXGT they are made out of the most flimsiest, cheapest, rubbish avalaible.
The engine was beyond economical repair. It only had a documented 60,000 miles on it. The Biggest waste of money ever £540 to be accurate.

BUY A nissan sylvia , XR3I , XR2 or XR2I , NOVA SRI or GTE , OPEL MANTA , VOLVO 480 Turbo or a S2 RS Turbo but don't buy french cars

Next time inspect the car before you buy it son!

mmmm, jonty, the axgt you bought was obviously a bad example!, you can't tarnish them all with the same brush, i have owned an xr2 in the past, lowered, high lift cam, s/s exhaust etc..., an uno turbo 1.4ie, an im now onto my 5th axgt. For reliability and economy the axgt has to be the best car i have owned so far!, my ax is running at 125bhp due to carbs, cam, pulley, exhaust an filters. The ax has go-kart handling due to koni ajustbles, 0-60 in 7.8 top speed 131mph. This car inialates standard rst's, xr2's, vts's, nova gte's etc..., not bad for a 1.4 8v. want 2 race?.

Listen SON, AXGT/GTI's are all gash. My friends have had them and praised them as well. I don't understand it, I'm 20 years old and I've had 10 cars and 2 motorbikes in the last 3 1/2 years, as follows 1.3 Metro, 1.3 pug 309, 90'spec XR3I, gsi3000 carlton, mk2 XR2(minted, until a momentary loss of talent on a corner), Orion mk2 1.6 efi(108bhp as std), AXGT (soooooooo bad!), Rover 416si 16v, sierra 1.6 carb (for the drifting oval at crail 1/4 mile) and my current car, a MK1 MR2 1.6 NA,120bhp ish, If you want to lose a race then name a place. ps where you at? i'm in crail.

My, my, you have had a lot of cars- what a vastly experienced young lad you are, and so humble with it. Bless. I sprint an AXGT, and while I agree that they arent screwed together all that well, who cares when you can demolish TVRs round a course! Best fun for the money.....This is my second AX from a list of about 300 motors now, and for what the car is, you cant ask for any more!

Same happened to me too m8! Driving along on the A1M and the temperature started to rise into the red. The next thing I know the car fills with smoke and steam and the head gasket is gone. The car has only done 60000 miles. Now ive got an XR3i and would never go back 2 a french car
