All short stories featured in Ian Rankin, A Good Hanging and Other Stories are fantstic! I find the Rebus short stories to be entertaining, and they contribute to readers' understanding of the novels, as they develop the character very effectively.
My favourite is entitled 'Sunday'. It deals with Rebus's state of mind in the aftermath of accidentally stabbing a drug dealer. The story is rich in religious symbolism, used cleverly to explore the theme of guilt. This story is different because it is set entirely in Rebus's flat, where readers learn of the event of the killing, through Rebus's reflections. I find this story most effective because you are able to see the Rebus
