Patronising pushy car dealers;

General Comments

Our Car Shop experience: The car buying experience is spoiled. The 'suited' dealers are pushy. The process is rushed. The management are patronising. They seem to want to grab your cash and move on asap. They don't tell you the offer of 7 days free insurance is only valid once you've chased it. You cannot drive away the same day as advertised. Appointments are to be kept by you but lax on their part. To sum it up even the windscreen wash is made up of only water and that's on a £10k purchase. Mind you, the car is nice once you get it home

    I have yet to purchase my car. I was tempted by the prospect of a 'car supermarket' such as The Car Shop, but my memory recalled hearing some not so positive reports of such places.

    My initial experience with them is that they are very keen to request a deposit like other reviewer suggests. Upon asking terms of refund the guy says "I will talk to my manager" - I suggest they have said the same thing to me when I finally discovered the car wasn't what I was looking for...

    Having purchased over 40 cars privately throughout my life, I can offer the following cautionary tales:

    - A car can have had some quite nasty damage in its life and yet not be recorded on HPI records - be very fastidious when looking at paintwork/shut-lines. Modern cars have a good standard in these areas, and anything that looks odd probably is just that! Okay, the repair could have been carried out very acceptably, but it will NEVER reinstate the same quality that the manufacturer did (unless it's a TVR. In which case it may be better! ;o> )

    - Get an independent report carried out for the car (RAC / AA / Other) - This will warn you of potential problems / condition of aspects of the car that might not be externally apparent. After all - You wouldn't buy an old house without a survey, would you?

    - You get what you pay for / No such thing as a bargain: In my case the car I was looking at seemed cheap for what it was. Now the man inside me that has bought all those cars has finally come to his senses and realised that there will be a good reason for this, and it won't be that they are just generous. It will be an unusually low spec / be hiding damage / possibly have been clocked / Require an expensive service soon / other.

    The reason service is poor and thin on the ground in these places is that they are cutting their own overheads, and they realise many customers can easily be pressured out of their hard-earned - Don't be one of them!

    - You can buy your own warranty for a privately purchased car (Although be careful to check what it covers) - Look on the web for more details.

    - It is likely that if a car is said to have had one lady owner that it will be a porky - Just as statements like 'motorway miles only' and 'Never driven in wet', 'Never raced or rallied' - All very hard to prove/disprove! Be wary, although if the one giving you the hard sell is a 60 year old woman, then you can probably be reasonably sure!

    - It is actually not a bad reckoning that if you are buying a car with the title 'GTI / Turbo / 16v / Sport' etc that it will have been driven in a spirited fashion for at least part of its life - Check for mechanical noises / bodywork damage. Equally, if it is called Multipla, Espace, Atoz, Scenic etc., then it is very unlikely that it will have been competing in Traffic light or Tesco's car park grand-prix's!

    - Use your intuition - If you smell a rat then walk away - An old 'unknown quantity' car WILL be more trouble than it is worth.

    - Lastly, KNOW YOUR STUFF - Do your research on Autotrader and on review sites etc., and Gen yourself up so that you know all there is to know about the car you are after. After all, if the dealer can't tell you in reasonable detail about the car then he is either trying to 'pull the wool' or not worthy of your cash. Read up on common faults, recalls, service intervals and specs etc.

    - Best of luck!
