General Comments

The Nissan Navara engine let go at 45000 miles. After investigation it appears to be a fault with the timing chain & gear on this model. At a cost of over £3000 + fitting Nissan should consider a recall as my vehicle is 9 Months out of warranty!!!!

Very Interesting. What do you do to put on 45,000 miles in 9 months?

What year was yours? I've just bought 03 reg d/cab.

Please read again it was 9 Months out of warranty when it occured. The vehicle is a 2002 D22 Double Cab.

Please tell me total cost of parts, labour, and why, if a reason, just so i can check mine out now. I have 12 month warranty, (bought it from a dealer). Many Thanks, Pete.

OK the vehicle is in a dealership now having the engine replaced. They called me yesterday to tell me the cost so far is £5800 + ancillaries + VAT! The cause is that there appears to have been a defect in the timing chain assembly, and there was a recall issued but apparently not to us ( we own 2 Navaras).

Ref Blown up Nissan Navara engines, noisy timing chains. There was a recall on Nissan Navara's, but Nissan kept it all to themselves. They did not send out a recall letter. I heard from a Nissan mechanic about a timing chain modification. I took mine in and had it done FOC during the warranty period. The Nissan garage would not comment on it. It stopped the timing chain rattle. The oil in the top of a Navara engine still drains away overnight - design fault that Nissan will not admit to.

I have a 2002 crew cab (new model at that time) and yesterday the engine ceased. It has 110000 miles and has been serviced every 8000 to 10000 miles in the garage where I bought it. I did let it run for 15000 miles before getting it serviced last week and have only done 250 miles since then. I have never had any problem with the motor to day, although it is generally used for road miles anyway. I did get the letter about the timing chain in 2003 (I think) and I left it in at the time so they could make the change. I would never have confirmed if same was done and am just curious if the reason for the engine ceasing might be that either it wasn't changed or that the problem is one that was likely to reoccur?

Terry, did Nissan assist you with engine replacement?

  • TerryS Rank: Corporal on 17th Dec 2007

Hi TerryS here, yes Nissan paid for the repair in full, but I had to play hardball to get anything from them.

I found this review helpful because...I have the same problem hopefully Nissan might wake up and admit they are at fault.

Hi I have a 54 reg d22 I want to get the con rod bearings changed before they go. Can anyone tell me how much I would expect to pay to have them replaced. In all other respects I love the car it's been great!
