It's free.
Extremely effective at reporting spammers to their host, ISP and data companies, as long as they take Spamcop reports seriously.
Publicly accessible blacklist which can be integrated into applications external to Spamcop (for the developers out there).
Can be very difficult to understand what and who you are reporting to, especially for the general internet user.
It is possible to report yourself if you submit an email with your domain name in it, as a lot of spammers will spoof an email address on your domain.
Makes absolutely no difference to spam if it is coming from countries that don't care about it, and the dedicated spammers will just relay their email via one of these countries.
I was receiving a great deal of spam, and I could not find anyway to unsubscribe, and so I decided to find some way to report it.
Spamcop seemed the answer, so I signed up. I was using it for only a couple of weeks when my website account was suspended by my hosting company. They told me I had been reported for spamming by Spamcop! After a great deal of stress and investigation, it turned out that it had been one of my reports that had caused it. The original spam email had included my domain name in the message, and Spamcop had sent a report, not only to the offending spammer's host, but also to mine. My site was eventually re-instated after I provided a lot of evidence it wasn't me that was spamming. Guilty until proven innocent appears to be the rule in this area.
There is a mechanism to prevent your IP address from being a part of the submission, however the discovery of this was too little too late, and it seemed quite complicated for the average user. Also Spamcop do give you a list of email addresses it is going to send a report to, unfortunately in my case the address was my hosts data company, and it was not one I recognised as having anything to do with my account.
Probably the most important point here though is that the majority of the spam was never stopped by using Spamcop. Only legitimate sources actually take Spamcop seriously, and strangely enough their not the people sending you the spam.
The reason for the low value for money rating is that it cost me time and effort to get my site back online, and my time means money.
