General Comments

The Weihrauch HW57 is a blinder but I do not like the loading mechanism yet.

I understand users get used to it and I have not had it long so hoping it will become natural soon.

I am not a compete doughnut and did the research first and it was either the BSA Supersport or the HW57 but the clincher was the price from J.S. Ramsbottom (£170) (although my friend recently bought a BSA Supersport from Uttings.com for a remarkable price of £139!)

We took both guns out to the garden and I must confess to liking the BSA more due to the loading mechanism, it reminded me of my dads Meteor Mk 2, simple yet effective.

To load the HW57, the underlever is cocked which releases this "Small tunnel" (I'm trying to make this simple because in all the reviews I read on this site, I did not picture this) at the top of the gun so the pellet can be inserted. Doing so takes more time than loading a brake barrel rifle. In addition, if the pellet does not go all the way in, then when reinserting the "tunnel", the mechanism can sheer the back of the pellet altering the shape which will effect aerodynamics and ultimately the accuracy. If you're reading this you are probably thinking, "Here's an idea, why don't you load the pellet properly?" and I agree, I am lazy, I like things to be simple and live by this motto. But the fact that it does take long to load increases the pressure to load the pellet quickly.

I will re-read the reviews to identify if there are any particular pellets which users can recommend.

In a couple of months I could be re-reading this and thinking what was I talking about. If this is the only thing I can thing of then the rifle can't be half bad can it? And it ain't, it's fantastic in all other areas.

I still prefer the BSA Supersport but do I regret going for a German make instead of British?

Well yes, I do actually. I should have gone for the Supersport...

The Germans spend an awful lot of money trying to convince us that their engineering is the best, just look at the ads on telly all the time. It ain't. It's good to see that this long established British manufacturer produces stuff that compares favourably to the german stuff. Please someone, don't now tell me that BSA make their guns in China!!!

I have both the Hw57 and the Supersport both in 0.177 and the build quality of the HW57 is far superior. Regarding pellet loading, you have to experiment to see which pellets both fit the loading port and are accurate. Mines likes Air Arms Fields, JSB exacts and Webley Lazapells, it makes 11.3-11.4ft/lbs and is deadly accurate. I think your review is any thing but fair to this fine rifle.
