Sharpshooter Delta 9's Review of Crosman Walther P99 Spring Pistol

Overall Rating

Good Points

Very realistic detail, from the trademarks,to the loaded chamber/cocking indicator behind the striker, to the way the grip forms to your hand, and the sights align just as naturally as pointing with your index finger, exactly like the firearm it simulates.
A very predictable trigger with a suprisingly clean break.
The plastic used for the frame, slide, and magazine are top notch; the magazine can take a short drop onto a pad during a tactical reload drill.
The controls are in exactly the same spot as the real P99, making them excellent training tools.

Bad Points

Very poor accuracy, even at close to medium range.
Barrel is very loosely fitted to frame, and rattles around between the slide, frame and bushing.
Racking the slide to chamber a round is difficult.

General Comments

I purchased this replica, due to the fact that I'm such a fan of the Walther P99, and I must say in scale, aesthetics, and ergonomics, this is an excellent replica.
As soon as I opened it up, I was impressed with how well it sat in the hand. The trademarks were a nice touch, as well as the loaded chamber indicator.

Upon loading the magazine and firing it for the first time, I was very disappointed with it's very poor accuracy. I'd purchased another airsoft pistol, a H&K USP made by an off-brand, and it spoiled me with it's 1'' groups @ 15'. At the same range, with a steady hand and even trigger pressure, I was having a difficult time hitting the supplied Gel Target at all, with many shots bouncing off the rim of the target, not only frustrating but unsafe. Fortunately the velocity is very mild, so damage to anything else is unlikely. I also noted that when racking the slide to chamber a round, the slide required considerable force and travel for the catch to get into position behind a pellet, to load it into the breech. I also had frequent jams between the feed catch and breech face, regardless of the grade of pellet used. Also, the barrel seemed so loose, I was sceptical of how well the breech would seal to the valve. Not to mention the sound of the P99 firing was remeniscent of a high velocity spitwad, fired from a cafeteria straw.
I must say, overall I was disappointed with the performance and quality of assembly and fitting of parts, especially considering that it was manufactured by Crosman, a quite reputable company, known for their quality of workmanship for every airgun that comes off its line. So, I really was expecting a little more, but I will keep it for as long as it lasts.
My Conclusion:
If you purchase airsoft guns merely for look and display, without the cost of the real thing, this is excellent for that purpose. If you own a real Walther P99, this will make a great inexpensive training aid, that you can safely use in your own home, without fear of accidental discharge of a firearm. Additionally, it would be equally suited for safely teaching safe handling of a firearm for youngsters and novice shooters. It's accurate enough for plinking as well, granted you are close, and the targets are large. It all depends what you intend to use it for, to justify the cost.
