Good Points

'NoiseGuard Technology' - very quiet!
Made by a good manufacturer.


Bad Points

It is prone to overheating if it is not 99.9% or more ventilated.
Slows over time.


General Comments

I got the Samsung SV1204H hard drive with my PC, which is an ADVENT 3213 from PC World.

It's features are OK; 120GB capacity (but 112/111GB registerable), and NoiseGuard technology that really works! In fact, I'd never have know that it was there... until it went wrong.

I love to fiddle around on the inside of my PV, which I'd do on a regular basis. However, recently I've taken the cover off my case and all wasn't well. It was worse than a grasping a hot radiator when you touched the hard drive! I then got back on the PC to download a PC monitoring software, which was able to confirm that my hard drive was getting to temperatures of over 200c!

On start-up, I checked my BIOS information, and it told me that the hard drive was already at 150c... AT START-UP!!! To think that the optimum working temperature for a hard drive is 35c-42c (continuous) - I think mine might have just broken that barrier!

I've contacted an engineer who has told me that getting cooling equipment for this hard drive won't help. He said that as soon as it starts overheating, it hasn't got long left!

I now have to get another hard drive. I guess this opens a door of opportunity for me; I can get an even better one!

I'm still going to stick with Samsung, but the hard drive is going to be a lot better. I'll make sure I get a cooling system for the next one, as I don't want the same thing to happen to the next one!

I'll update you on my new hard drive!

    I said I'd get back to you, so here you go........

    I've now got my new harddrive. It's a Hitachi Dechstart 26140 and is great! Temperature now just 23c, but that is aided by the cool harddrive cooler I got for it.
