necronomicon's Review of Tokyo Marui M4A1 AEG

Overall Rating

4 stars

Good Points

High rate of fire (Around 18 BB per second)
Nice build quality
Very much like the real M4A1 in appearance, weight and rate of fire.
Full battery charge lasts hundreds of rounds.

Bad Points

Some suffer barrel wobble!
68 round standard magazine does not last long on full auto!
Need to be a proper airsoft player at a club to use to full potential, not really a gun for backyard children/ Teen fun due to cost and potential to get yourself in trouble!

General Comments

One of the Marui Auto Electric guns (AEG), and costing around 160 to 300 pounds new, the M4A1 is a very popular model with Airsofters due to its killer looks (based on the American current service rifle), upgradability, and reasonable performance out of the box.

The gun fires 6mm (Excel or Marui or other high quality) plastic BBs at the rate of around 18 per second and at a power of about 0.7 joules, the supplied 68 round magazine lasts just a couple of seconds.
A wealth of extras are available, such as scopes, laser sights, bipods, RIS rails (for attaching other equipment), custom gearboxes, aftermarket barrels, high capacity magazines, batteries etc....

The supplied carry handle /sight is removable to reveal a standard 'weaver' type rail for 20mm scopes etc, NOTE this is not the same as an 11mm airgun rail. Open sights are fully adjustable for windage and elevation.

The gun has an adjustable stock with about 6 positions to suit the size of the shooter, and a sling can be attached using the supplied sling mounts.

Accuracy is reasonable, i can shoot 2 to 3 inch groups at 15 yards, but the gun isn't really bedded in yet.
The gun features an 'adjustable' hop system, this is where you can apply a variable amount of backspin to the BB, allowing it to fly further and more accurately, the adjustment is easy to access and use.

Filling the magazine with the supplied rod and tube is a bit fiddly at first, but you quickly get used to it, and don't forget magazines with capacities of several hundred rounds are available.

Overall a nice reliable airsoft gun, looks great, fun to shoot, especially on full auto, and very upgradable. BUT: You really need somewhere proper to shoot it (i.e. a club!), think hard before you buy as this is one expensive toy, and be mindful that the Government in its wisdom is currently thinking of cracking down on all 'replica' guns, we wait to hear what this means for Airsofters.

I have been looking for a decent M4A1 AEG for ages and cant find one, every one i have found has been a bit ''under par'' if this rifle is as good as you say it is, would you be able to point me the way to a site or shop in the south-west to buy one! cheers.

Hi Rodie, I assume you are in the South West of England?- I would recommend Zero One airsoft for mail orders of Tokyo Marui and several other brands which do M4A1s, expect to pay around £170- 300 for one though!
