General Comments

1999 4.0 LITRE Jaguar 'S' TYPE: Purchased in 2001 with 19k (£23k) and sold in early 2005 (£9k) with 54k and F.J.S.H. Fast car with nice exhaust growl but badly affected by side winds, and unstable during high speed cornering. Several sets of tyres destroyed by extreme uneven wear even after Jaguar set and re-set tracking / geometry. Worst fault cannot be corrected namely 'S' types cannot be driven on the very lightest of snow. But, they can do what should be engineeringly impossible - namely move sideways! Other faults which my wife experienced with her car - all coils failed - one by one - and at one point we waited more than six weeks for Jaguar to source replacements. Coolant expansion bottle cracked (a common fault) and the air con. packed up. We have owned several Jaguars, and this was by far the worst, and caused us to abandon the marque for ever. (The car was off the road for 5 of its last 7 months with us, notwithstanding massive service bills and throwing money at it hand over fist). It has now been replaced with a 16 year old Bentley 'Turbo R' which is nothing like the trouble or expense!! Of the 40+ vehicles which we have owned the 'S' type falls in the 3 worst cars. Our previous XJ40, and XJ8 were both far better cars! Petrol MPG: 21.
