Better (but more PC requirements-demanding) graphics.
Includes factors like Civics and Religion in its gameplay.
More Leaders and Civilizations available.
Unless you have the Deluxe version (with the ring-bound manual), you may have to figure your way out of the game, even after trying the tutorial mode.
For people used to the previous Civilization formats, some may find the current graphics demands on the PC too much.
Consequently, one needs a high-end PC to play it, compared to earlier versions.
Initially, I found Civilization 4 somewhat over-rated. And even while I played my first tutorial game, I felt disappointed, especially because of its intensive system requirements. But, as I played it longer, I could not help but be addicted to my game -- as in previous versions. This 4th version is worth the wait.
It purports to be multi-player capable, but I haven't tried it yet.
