General Comments

As someone who travels throughout the UK quite a lot I have used many different Little Chefs throughout the UK. There was a time when these places were a dead cert for good food and service.

My how times have changed.

After a series of bad experiences throughout the country I resolved about 8 months ago to never visit another. However last Sunday I broke my vow and decided to try again. The Little Chef in question in on the A3 just north of Guildford.

Things looked bad when we waited almost 10 mins to be seated, despite the staff quite clearly seeing that we were waiting. When the waitress came over she obviously could barely speak English and just waved in the direction of a table. We said we wanted to sit by the window and she seemed fine with that.

After quite some time someone came to take our order. This guy could speak English and things seemed fine. As we waited for our food though we watched as ever single (I'm not joking) table then complained about some aspect of their food. One table had been given 4 mugs of tea all of which were stone cold. It turned out that the hot water was broken... the table next to us were then told that there were no cold drinks available as the fridge wasn't working. Within a couple of minutes the old couple next to us complained to the waitress that they hadn't received the toast that was supposed to come with their meal.

Eventually our tea turned up, strangely it was hot so don't know where they got the water from but it had a nice little scum floating on top. Lovely. Meanwhile old couple still hadn't received toast and the man eventually went over and said they were leaving but not paying for their toast.

Our food then arrived, also without toast, as we had seen what had happened with the old couple we immediately asked for the toast. The waitress walked off looking indifferent. By this point there were some people waiting to be seated who again had waited 10 mins or so.

We waited and waited. Eventually I blew my top and had a go at the waiter, the usual excuses came out but we still didn't get any toast. After a long and protacted arguement we left without paying, the couple that had also taken ages to be seated left at the same time. Also during our time we saw one table go and get their food themselves as it was just sitting waiting to be delivered and another table complain because they had been their ages and no-one had taken their order.

The experience above is of one occasion but there have been many many similar ones.

Oh, and the food that we did get was awful.

Shocking.
