Discreet performance, practicality, handling, economy, six-speed box, willingness to rev.
Discreet car, heavy steering, turning circle, body dents easily, driving position too high, gearbox bulky when cold.
After having emptied my bank account with a Corrado VR6, I needed something that represented performance, economy, practicality, and value-for-money.
There was little to choose from that was younger than 5 years old and not too expensive, and having regretted selling my 205 1.9 GTi some years earlier I looked at a Peugeot 306 GTi-6.
Getting in the car, you notice that you sit quite high, and the driving position is not ideal, although most controls are easy to hand, and the pedals and steering wheel are well placed.
The engine has a slightly raspy note, coming on cam at around 4000rpm and upwards. Here it really flies, puling well in all gears. The six-speed box is great, though when cold it is a little notchy and needs to be treated with care. Sixth is great for motorway driving.
Economy wise, if you drive it hard it understandably uses quite a bit of petrol (1.2l/km), but with normal use you should see around 0.85-0.9l/km. Not bad for a car with 167hp, and one which begs to be driven fast.
Handling is good, and I especially like the way the car absorbs potholes etc., which makes fast driving possible on all surfaces. On B-roads there cannot be much that can touch it in its class, and with its discreet looks many people get a surprise.
This may be seen as a disadvantage since it is definitely not a car people turn around and look at in the car park.
But with its fantastic engine, great handling and superb performance it has to be a bargain second-hand, and probably the best 'second car' for the family man, you can buy without ruining the bank.
