Black Diamond's ATC belay device is simple yet effective. I've tried a variable friction belay, and I didn't find any real advantage over the standard ATC.

Forgot to mention that the ATC is being used with 10.5 wide rope but has also been used with thicker ropes without problem. A thinner rope would probably need a belay with more resistance.
