Sounds more comprehensive than it is, and did not cover shipping costs for repair of damaged items covered under travel policy.


General Comments

I was initially very pleased with the Post Office travel insurance, underwritten by Fortis, when I first purchased it for a trip to Germany and Poland this past summer. The staff at the Post Office were extremely friendly, and recommended the policy highly as 'covering everything.'The telephone staff were also very warm on initial inquiries. Of course, when the actual crunch came and I had to claim for something, in my case, shipping costs for a repaired camera (the repair itself was free from the manufacturer as it was under warranty), Fortis refused to pay up. Although they said they would have covered direct expenses due to damage for personal possessions during the trip, they had a vague clause in their policy which said that indirect costs associated with repair were not covered. They said that this meant shipping costs. Admittedly, my shipping costs were not high at under £20. Still, I was very put out that they they evaded shipping costs for my repaired item, as arguably I believe that should count as part of the expense of repair. Further, a previous policy I had held for a stolen item HAD covered overseas shipping costs for a new laptop. This only goes to show you that you can't trust sales staff, however friendly, and when it comes down to the actual claim, insurance companies will try their best to bilk customers through the small print.

    The post office is appalling !
