Do you want a dog that simply lives and breathes to see you? Would do absolutely anything for you? These dogs will be by your side constantly- you'll never be out of your German Shepherd's sight. My German Shepherd took to me the most in my family, the rest of the family likes to joke that my dog could be in a deep sleep (near my feet of course) and all I'd have to do is move a muscle and she'd open her eyes and look at me as if "we" had something to do. She follows me everywhere.
German Shepherd are naturally feared by people because of their Police dog image. When I walk my German Shepherd people cross the street and walk on the other side. Little do they know my baby would never hurt anyone. In fact, my Dalmatian would more likely bite a kid vs my shepherd. My shepherd took to a new puppy I had bought (toy poodle) and became her 'mother' protecting her from the other dogs. (what a relief for me!)
German shepherds are also a breed of dog that will most likely stay in your yard. They aren't a wandering breed. (always neuter and spay!) When I take my GS for a walk she's always happiest when we are heading home. Good training is well worth the effort, luckily with this breed, they LOVE to be trained! Make a German shepherds day - teach him something!
They shed like crazy! My shepherd is fairly thick coated (especially in the winter) and when spring rolls around she produces handfuls of hair! Small price to pay for such devotion.
The German Shepherd is for someone who can appreciate it's intense devotion, intense size, and intelligence. People never forget their German shepherds... I've had many people approach me while I was walking mine and tell me about a childhood German Shepherd they had.
