frogger's review of Honda Odyssey EX

“I'm not certiain if my 2005 Honda Odyssey was poorly...”

written by frogger on 20/09/2005

I'm not certiain if my 2005 Honda Odyssey was poorly manufactured or if the dealership has poorly trained mechanic but in the 8,000 miles I have driven the car (purchased new) I have spent more time at the dealership than for any other car I have owned. My problems started with a 5000 mile checkup where they rotated the tires. After that the car vibrated badly at high speed and when the breaks were applied. The dealership said one of the tires was out of balance and said they corrected the problem but in reality they had not. I finally took the car to a tire deaaler and found that the dealership had not balanced the tire correctly because they had not taken off old weights before installing new. Once we got the tires properly balanced the high speed vibration stopped but breaking vibration continues. Apparently on some Honda vehicles if you overtighten the wheel lug nuts you can distort the break rotor which is the cause of breaaking vibration. Honda installed new rotors but tightened the lug nuts so tight that I could not break them loose to change a tire even with the help of a 2' cheater bar. Honda told me they have to tighten the wheel nuts to 120ft-lbs. of torque to inssure that the lug nuts will not come loose from the aluminum wheels.

I also learned the hard way that Honda uses special tires and wheels on the Odyessy which cannot be service by just any dealer. I do not buy Honda's run flat tires but found they put run flat rims on some of their models which require special balancing.

I also own a 2004 Toyota Sienna and wish now that I had bought another instead of the Odyessy. The Sienna is a much more owner friendly car and for my money of better quality.

The only thing I like about the Odyessy over the Sienna is the turn radius which makes getting into and out of tight spots easier.
