Good Points
Pride and Prejudice
General Comments
The Pride and Prejudice movie is a first class adaptation of the wonderful, often filmed and televised book by Jane Austen. The script writer has cleverly and thoroughly caught the subtlety of the original in the very limiting time allowed by the film genre.
We watched the film from the opening, prepared to hate it and expecting it to spoil our preconceptions. It was a riveting movie to watch. The photography and settings were moving and cleverly devised, and the casting almost perfect.
Keira Knightly was a delightful Elizabeth Bennett. She managed to show a delicious sense of the ridiculous without overdoing it, and whilst maintaining her strong sense of moral and ethical dignity.
Matthew Macfadden seemed a little too stolid to start with, but his good looks and mellowing characterisation produced a most attractive and believable Darcy.
Brenda Blethyn was an almost perfect Mrs. Bennett, in a role very easy to overdo. Donald Sutherland was relatively weak as Mr. Bennett, but only in the strongest of company.
All in all, we had a really great evening at the cinema. We loved it!!
