Assertive, yet pleasing hop character
Limited distribution area (Northeastern US only)
Saranac Pale Ale is one of my favorite beers. Produced by the F.X. Matt Brewing Company of Utica, NY, the Saranac brand makes over a dozen distinctive microbrew-quality beers, and sells them at a decent price. Saranac produces four beers year-round (Pale Ale, Adirondack Lager, Black-and-Tan, Pilsner) and rotates the others seasonally. The Pale Ale is made in the British style, with a fruity-yet-bitter hop presence, a subtle malty sweetness, and enough residual dextrins to give a decent weight to it. Best served at just under cellar temperature, the hop character is too assertive when served ice cold (usually by barkeeps and restaurant owners who don't know any better). An excellent, emminently quaffable traditionally-styled ale.
