Free POP mail account; for other free email accounts like Yahoo and Hotmail you have to pay for a POP account. I had to get a POP account because I just installed Thunderbird and that's the kind I needed, and I didn't want to pay for one. You can also choose from several different domains that can appear after the @ in your name, i.e. user@bonbon.net or user@phreaker.net, which is kind of cool.
Their FAQ is very confusing and unhelpful. It's clear whoever wrote it was too lazy to give clear, detailed repsonses. Same with the POP Client Settings they give you, which tells you how to set up your address with your email client. Also, their support center is slow. It takes them days and days to answer one little support ticket.
I am trying to set up my HotPOP account with Thunderbird still. Of course, HotPOP doesn't have a guide for Thunderbird, just Outlook and Mozilla...but anyway, I can get mail, but I can't send it. This is what HotPOP says for configuring the SMTP server: "*HotPOP's outgoing (SMTP) mail server requires authentication. The username and password are the same as the POP Server and website. Do not select "secure" password authentication." What the heck do they mean by "the POP server and website"?! Thunderbird asks for just the username when you select the option for authentication, and I've entered my full email address, part of my email address, pop.bonbon.net, bonbon.net, smtp.bonbon.net, my password, the port #s for both the POP and SMTP, and it still doesn't work. I'm fairly sure that's the only reason why I can't send email, and I submitted a support ticket almost two days ago asking for clarification of what I should put in. I still haven't heard back. This is an outrage, it shouldn't take this long to answer a question, and it's their fault their guide was so vague in the first place. Also if the authentication isn't the problem and it's something wrong with their system that is preventing me from sending email. They are very cheap and have horrible customer service! I do NOT reccommend them.
