General Comments

Bought my HP Pavilion ZT1170 Laptop 3 years ago and initiallly thought how nice it was. Within the first month the display went black. A ghost of an image can be seen so I guess the inverter went out. Mine also went through the hell of constantly shutting down and rebooting unexpectedly. After talking to HP, and since it was out of warranty there was nothing to do. On one occassion, on reboot, XP pointed me to a device fault and digging further, it turned out to be memory related. After trying to replace and upgrade the memory modules, it turned out to be that I can't use 2 modules at the same time, particularly the secondary slot under the laptop. So I got a 512 for the internal slot just to keep the original memory size. After that I never get the abrupt shutdown/reboot problem. Not too long after that the DVD/CDRW no longer works correctly. Reading is OK, burning is now a pipe dream or only from my desktop systems. Then after that some keys stopped working - So I replaced the keyboard and it was okay for a while. Now the exact same problem is happening again and I'm no longer suspecting the keyboard instead I think it's the motherboard. The motherboard is a piece of rubbish, can't use secondary RAM slot and keeps killing my keyboard. The original drive died as well and I'm using a 20GB 4200RPM drive. I contemplated getting the 7200RPM drive, but cringed at the thought of putting more money into this piece of rubbish. Forget about using it with it unplugged from the outlet because the system slows to a crawl and the battery is dead within 30 minutes. The way I use it now is plugged into an outlet, network attached and remotely controlled with Synergy. During all this time, the delivered system diagnostics tool never told me anything about any potential device problem.
