The Virgin Spring is another Bergman masterpiece. Made in 1960 it is one of his most powerful films and that is saying something. Set in 14th century Sweden it is filmed beautifully and offers all manner of religious, political and moral insights. A wonderful moving fable of a story - the film has a quality almost of a dream about it. A young virgin, a peasant, is raped and murdered by travelling vagabonds after her half sister invokes a pagan curse. The murderers then - via a strange fateful development - ask for food and shelter from the dead girl's parents who are simple honest country folk. Slowly they discover the true identity of the travellers' and pursue their revenge. A film about redemption which appears to have a deeply moral and religious core to it. The final scenes amongst nature are among the most moving in cinema.
