Bad Points

Has a clause in the Policy Conditions "If he or she is prevented from carrying out any part of the duties pertaining to his or her normal gainful occupation" - can be read to mean if you "CAN" do "any" part what you used to do, or if you "CAN'T" do any part.


General Comments

After paying into this policy for nearly 20 years, I injured my back and had to sell my business. Abbey Life first tried to get out of paying up, by saying that I was now unemployed, and therefore not covered, even though I was only unemployed because of my back injury!
I took a summons out against them in the Small Claims Court (so as not to run up a large legal fee), but their Solicitors, dragged me into the Fast Track Court, and said that they would rely on the "If he or she is prevented from carrying out any part of the duties pertaining to his or her normal gainful occupation" clause. Faced with huge Legal Costs if I lost, I had no choice other than to drop the case.
In other words this Healthmaster policy is not worth the paper it is written on, as if I could have been wheel-chaired into work and could have done "any part of the duties pertaining to my normal gainful occupation" (such as answer the phone,) they claim that they would not be liable to pay out.
I wonder how many other people have been "ripped off" like this?

    I will steer well away from Abbey Life Healthmaster after reading this review - its behaviour like this that brings the industry into disrepute.

    After reading this I will steer well away from Abbey Life Healthmaster. You pay in good faith and when it comes to claiming they wriggle out of it any way they can - makes you the victim twice over !! No wonder their industry has such a bad reputation.
