First Impressions: Beautiful gun. Fabulous workmanship.
First Impressions: Too much clicking and clacking when you cock it to be a great hunting rifle. Seven inch barrel is not a confidence builder either for a hunting "rifle." All of my barrel cockers are much quieter to operate (HW, Webley, RWS)
I have wanted an Air Arms TX200 HC for a long time (2-years)to compliment my .22 BSA SuperTen, but got tired of waiting for a longer barrel TX200 MK III to come in. The gun is in .22 because in the field a pre-charge can let you down and switiching over to a .177 for certain applications is not always the right thing to do.
First impression was good as the gun is extremely good looking. Even with the dinky barrel. It is actually the same overall length as my SuperTen. But, within the first few shots I realized that the gun was very noisy when cocking and somewhat cumbersome to operate. You have to put the buttstock on your thigh and and yank down the cocking arm. Then the anti-Bear trap safety makes even more clicking noises when you close the rifle to fire it.
My confidence level as a hunter was not real high as I was breaking in this gun. I also have a hard time believing that a seven inch barrel is effective on anything put a pistol, but I have been told that the science has given it a good report. We'll see.
As a hunter that is paid to hunt (though I don't consider myself a Pro hunter) pests on private land, ethics is first and foremost what I want to portray.
I quickly learned how to reset the safety and how to decock the gun. Getting to know your airgun is the only "first job" you have when you get a new gun. Air Arms does a great job of explaining the workings of the gun.
As a first impression in the field, the gun was fine to carry and use. After firing a lot of pellets to get near a breakin level, I sighted it in with several kinds of pellets and the gun is accuarate at 15 meters and hit the targets I put out at 45-yards where there would be an ethical placement on small game.
It grouped well at 15-meters with every pellet I tried, even the Crow Magnum Hollowpoints. It proved to be powerful on the inanimate "things" I use to build confidence in my hunting guns. Since there were no opportunities to take small game, I'll have to wait another day to do what this gun was designed to do.
I feel that the best form of hunting with this gun would be from a well camoed and hidden blind, or taking Pigeons and other pest species silly enough to sit and listen to the clicking and clacking of the cocking mechanism before you can aim at them.
But don't think I dislike the gun. I like the gun very much.
