Rufus Wainwright is part of what is possibly the most notorious family of singer-songwriters around at the moment (Louden, Martha, etc.). He is, possibly, the best of the lot with his self-effacing, gentle songs and his beautiful voice. Poses is his second album and it's a combination of his personal observations about the mundanities of his daily existence and the deep dark desires of his soul. At times he sounds eerily like an American version Radiohead's Thom Yorke if Thom were to master the art of simplicity in his lyrical storytelling. The combination of his voice, the barebones lyrics and the charm of his catchy and upbeat melodies makes this a fairly addictive CD. Current favourite tracks are "Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk" which is a light hearted take on addictive behavior and "Poses" which is about needing to put on airs to feel confident. This record is charming and lovely and is worth checking out.
