Good Points

The actors can act.
Effcts well done, not suprising considering the cost.

Bad Points

Si-Fi aspect secondary to the family story.

General Comments

I thought with War of the Worlds I was going to see a Sci Fi film about an alien invation. This film is about an access visit that is going badly. Some aliens start to make life unpleasant so the Father +2 try to get to Mum. The teenage son is being a teenager. The pre teen fragile daughter is wise beyond her years. Dad can't cope with either of them and on top of that the place is overrun with Tripods.
The effects were good. Similar story to "The Day after Tommorow" but not as well done.

   I agree that War of The Worlds is not as great as some rate it, though I thought you were a little harsh. I would give it 5 or 6. There are better Tom Cruise films and Stephen Spielberg films around, but this is entertaining and worth at least seeing once. It is possibly better in the cinema, but I saw it on DVD. What lets it down for me is that it is a remake, and in my view remakes are only worth it if they improve on what went before. They had better effects in this, only in that CGI allows more than could be done in the earlier film. Judged in its own time, the original is more exiting, more suspenseful and more frightening. It also is truer to the original HG Wells story.
