General Comments

We arrived to find the San Pawl Hotel extremely run down and with an unwelcoming greeting we were shown to our room. Being tired from a long nights travelling we found our room to be tiny and incredible dirty. Rubbish from the previous occupants was still placed round the room. There was no air conditioning and the ceiling fan was broken. The toilet was tiny and the few pieces of furniture was old and half broken. First impressions of the hotel seemed to be more of a bed-sit. After having to sleep in these conditions, as complaints to receptions ended up nowhere, we asked for the manager the next morning. We had no sleep that night, after opening the balcony door because of the incredible heat lead to us having to cover ourselves in sheets as the sound of mosquitoes flew past our ear all night. The manger basically said that we got what we booked and accused me of lying about the fan being broken in the room! In the end I offered to pay for the upgrade to a better room costing a little bit over a hundred pounds. As the holiday went on I heard lots of families and guests doing the same. The upgraded room was a little better and had air conditioning and descent facilities, apart from the cockroaches that plagued it. The hotel pool was incredibly small. There were enough sun beds for the guests however the sun beds did get taken up as the hotel seemed to let loads of local residents use their facilities. The pool area become overly crowded with locals using it, which was irritating considering the fact that we paid a large amount of money to have access to a pool. The food was literally the same menu every day for the two weeks we stayed there. Even then there was limited choice and quality that kind of reminded you of school diners. The entertainment at night in the hotel was light but still good to relax to. The area itself seems very run down. The streets were dirty and the walk to the nearest activity spot (which was bugabba) was about 15 minutes. The nightlife was very limited hardly that many bars or clubs and you had to be careful in what bars you went to as the prices were high in some of them. However there were some nice restaurants in the square and the walk along the bay was beautiful and extremely romantic. There was no beach nearby and a long bus journey was required to get to the nearest one. The buses were cheap out there and efficient.
