Nikon 801s (N8008) - Having no great bad points this 35mm SLR body can compete with all modern entry-level cameras (like the Nikon F55, F65 and F75) if you can live with a slower and simpler autofocus system. Being compatible to the MF-Nikkons (work in A and M-Mode with center weighted or spot-metering) you can get very reliable lenses cheap on ebay.
The maximum X-Sync-Time of 1/250s, which can otherwise only be found in pro-bodies, makes day-flash shots much more pleasant.
It has to be said, that the DOF-preview only works on A+M mode and when using MF-Nikkors the aperture has to be selected on the f-stop ring on the lens.
The jog wheel for the right thumb serves as dial for VariControl (in P and Ph-mode), ISO-, Drive-, Mode-, Metering-System-, Exposure-Compensation(+/-5 EV)- and Multi-Exposure-Options while pressing the respective button. There is no complicated menu-surfing.
The ability to change focusing-screens and attach the Multi-Control Back 'MF21' make this body a good choice for the advanced amateur.
The rubber-armed high-quality plastic body was able to take impacts from falling down a few times without any harm.
When used without AF the 4AA batteries provide power to more than 120 rolls of 36exp films but when empty there is no mechanical backup.
