General Comments

I bought my BSA Goldstar air rifle as a repair job, it had been used for professional pest control.

With a good strip, relube and careful screwing together it is a fully functioning tidy rifle.
Even before I polished and honed the internals it was a smooth rifle, now it's silky.

The magazine operates very well if used carefully and ensure that the locating rod is all the way home before closing the breech. It is possible to push the magazine rod too far out, I have fitted a small stop to prevent this happening. BSA will usually sort out problems with the magazines for free, try calling them before giving up on the rifle.

I find the handling good, a bit of front end bias can be useful on a springer. At the end of the day, it's an underlever rifle with twice as much metal hanging out the front as a breakbarrel.

A scope is essential on a rifle like this, you will need low mounts as the maxgrip scope rail lifts the scope higher than normal. Incidentally, if you are going to remove the whole piston assembly, you will need to also remove the scope rail to make this possible.

Good review lightning 22, you're just the man that can help me. How did you take the scope rail off?. I've tried to lever it up but it won't budge, I tried to knock the pin out, it won't move , it's on really solid, it was bought in 1994. I think there's a piece of rubber underneath there, dampa mount , there's only a pin holding it, I thought it would just lift off, but this is really on solid. I took the piston out as I couldn't get to the last spacer (bad mistake), now I have to reset the trigger and underlever overtravel to index the magazine. I was only fitting a gas strutt, shouldn't have taken the piston past the trigger sear. I believe the compression chamber needs to come down to the trigger sear before I feed in the piston (will only come as far as the scope rail lugs, 2 inches off sear), so I'm stuck at the moment, I just want confirmation that the scope rail has to come off to reset trigger and underlever overtravel. Is this the right proceedure? Bring compression chamber to make contact with trigger sear and feed piston in. Hold trigger on fire and push trigger locking plate forwards towards muzzle, knock piston over sear (with the safety rod from trigger locking plate dismantled). This is my first airgun so I don't know much about the workings, need confidence I don't want to foul things up more than I have already. Can you add anything or confirm that this is the right procedure, thank you, Brian E-mailed BSA for help but no reply yet.
