If you're unfortunate enough to still have to use cassettes for anything, TDK SA90 cassettes are good enough for most purposes. They're general purpose, good for copying music or recording voices and will hold up pretty well under multiple plays. They don't tend to snag or break. In fact, they have always been my brand and make of choice for creating masterly mix tapes for friends, family and those whom I wish to impress.

Unfortunate? Just listen to a Nakamichi Dragon, a CR7 (or any top end vintage deck) recording and playback and you will soon rephrase your opening statement to "if you are fortunate enough to afford to still record on tape....". Undoubtedly digital sound, CDs, MP3, iTunes etc. have revolutionized the functionality and easiness of listening and recording of music at a very good quality/price ratio. No vinyl scratches, recording songs in seconds instead of runnign through the whole song etc. Whoever doesn't admit that is either blind or refuses to face reality. However, the warm sound of decks like the above, will reward anyone who can afford to dedicate time to make lifetime recordings.
