Elaborate theming, beautiful landscaping, good rides.
Very busy with longish queues, staff are not particularly helpful or customer friendly and generally do not speak very good English.
Universal Mediterranea Resort, Port Aventura - We visited Port Aventura in June and thoroughly enjoyed it. We bought 14 day tickets - these didn't cost significantly more than the 3 day passes and were quite good value. This also meant we could spend a few hours at the park and come and go each day, without feeling we had to dash around and fit everything into a shorter time.
The park is spotlessly maintained and the landscaping and theming are particularly impressive. It was quite crowded though and full of Spanish teenagers who, although harmless, were boisterous, very loud and queue jumped regularly.
There were fairly long queues at some of the big rides - sometimes queue time was over an hour - Hurrican Condor, Dragon Khan and the Polynesian Water Ride seemed to be the most popular.
The park has 5 themed areas - Far West, Polynesia, China, Mediterranean and Mexico. The theming is superb - the restaurants are also themed but mostly served fast food. Each area has a selection of shows to see, as well as the rides. We particularly enjoyed the Can Can Show in a saloon in the Far West, Fiesta Mariachi in Mexico and the Polynesian dancers who performed on a tropical beach setting.
The rides are good - one of our party - a roller coaster junkie described Dragon Khan as the ultimate rollercoaster. He was not so impressed with Hurrican Condor though. There are plenty of rides for little ones as well - our 22 month old son loved the horse ride in Mexico and the carousel. Each area has a good selection of children's rides.
The evening light and firework show is impressive - set around a lake. The downside is it starts at midnight - a long time to hang around with small children.
The water park - Costa Caribe is also very good. Even with the 14 day pass you only get to go there one time. There are lovely lagoons, water rides and slides and an excellent pool/play area for small children. You need to find a sunbed in a shaded area as soon as you get in - it gets very hot and shaded spots are not that plenteous and are quickly taken. The disadvantage with Costa Caribe is it is quite small, very busy and felt a bit cramped when we were there.
Overall though, the theme park and water park are very good and worth visiting. They are comparable to Florida parks, although (perhaps obviously) everything - shows, etc. are in Spanish and the staff are not so helpful or customer-focussed as in Florida.
