Amores Perros (Love's a Bitch) is a film I'd been hearing about for ages but hadn't managed to watch, despite having a DVD copy in the house for the last 6 months or so. We finally got around to it this weekend and I'm sorry we waited so long now. It interweaves three very different stories about love all connected by a car crash which occurs in the opening moments of the movie.
The first story is that of Octavio and Susana. Susana is married to Octavio's violent brother and has his baby. Octavio is in love with Susana and in order to raise money to run away with her he begins taking his beloved dog to the dog fights, until his brother discovers what is going on.
The second is between a model and her lover who has left his wife for her. She is badly injured in the car crash and is suffering the potential loss of her looks and career and the disappearance of her dog.
The third is about a man who left his family to fight in the revolution, ended up in prison and now works as a hitman while looking after stray dogs. He is hired to do one final job at the same time he discovers his ex-wife has died and his paternal feelings for his daughter begin to resurface.
This is a brutal and moving film which explores love from a variety of angles only to conclude that it is always painful and never nice. There's a couple of gory scenes, especially relating to the dog fighting, all of which play on the title.
Overall, it's an unusual script and a very powerful message.
