Why didn't they include silicon earbuds? (extra purchase)
General Comments
Shure E2c: I'll start this by saying the Sony MDR-EX71SLs are great phones for the money. I had a pair and after 18 months of pure abuse the left channel died (RIP!)
Whilst looking for replacements I came across various Shure and Etymotic models. Cheapest were the E2C's which after umming and erring I bought instead of the Sonys.
It took a lot of messing around to get them to fit. Foam sleeves didn't work. Only the small plastic ones would fit and the sound was only good if I kept my mouth shut! After a bit of research I found there are soft silicon earbuds available which I duly ordered (more money ~£13, Google for PA749). Now they fit excellently! The difference from the EX71s is that there is a full 1.6m lead so a little more difficult if you use a remote and want a short lead. The other thing is that they exit over the ears, around your head and down your back, not quite as convenient as the Sonys asymmetic design.
OK enough negative stuff! Once you start listening you immediatey notice the overblown bass of the Sonys is not there. You might even want to tweek your player's equaliser. Then you notice the detail that you've never heard before. I know it sounds a bit cliche'd but you really can hear things you never heard before and it adds to your enjoyment. Then after more listening you realise where the top and mid was a bit harsh with the Sonys the E2C is smooth and well controlled without being overbright and ultimately it is this along with the revelation in detail that wins through and grabs your heart. This is good enough for me to counteract all the bad things
In summary if the best sound and music is ultimately what you are after, then the E2Cs are for you. If you can't be bothered with phaffing (?!) about then maybe consider something other than the E2Cs.
