Good looking unit.
Volume peak level poor, however not used above 50% of total volume. Irregular problems with rear speaker output. DVD unit Stopped working for no real reason?
I was unaware of the problems with this product. However, I have been looking at many reports regarding the Sony DVD S880 system.
I purchased mine about 18 months ago, but did not take out the extended warranty. Like many, I bought this system because Sony sell their name, and it looked good.
I did not use the unit for longer than 5 hours at the weekend and I would estimate the total use over this period above, about 400 - 500 hours (MAX)
My unit failed whilst on stand by. I contacted Sony and took the DVD to a recommended Sony repair engineer. I have been informed that the power board is faulty and it will cost £250-00 to fix it.
Judging by the overall complaints, I am not confident that the above repair will remove the problem.
It may be that my direct link to Sony, may result in Sony covering the overall repair, time will tell.
I asked why the unit failed, well, well!! "we are not too sure, possibly a power surge" they think.
I explained that I have 7 other Sony products in my house all connected to the mains, and all are working fine.
I have discussed this with Sony and the engineer, and I explained that the previous Sony system had overheating problems, they did not make any comment.
It will cost me £23.00 to take the unit away from the engineer, at this stage I do not know what Sony will do. I paid £700.00 for this unit.
It is obviously a long standing problem that Sony have had, and I feel they have failed to notify their customers with regards to the overall performance .
In addition, the overall reports in this product review web page, clearly indicates that Sony are failing to accept, the product is far from the real quality they sold it as.
I have taken note of many of the reportz, some have indicated that they wish to challenge Sony by compiling a list of names. My recommendation to all concerned is to open the BBC Watchdog page and report your complaint to them, that is what I will be doing this coming week.
I have paid for a quality system, at the time, one of the higher priced units in the shop.
I also have some very cheap dvd players (under £30.00) which work harder than the above unit. They are all working well without fault.
I informed Sony that I have recently purchased a Sony Wega 42 inch TV surrounds system, costing £1,800.00, this takes my Sony expenditure to just over £5000 in the past 3 years.
I am not happy with the DVD S880.
Sony should put their hands up and admit there are many technical problems with this unit. I feel Sony have many good products, however this is a bad apple.
I hope customer loyalty will make Sony act in the appropriate manner and recall this product, irrespective to when it was purchased. Bearing in mind it seems to be failing within 12- 24 months of purchase.
Many manufacturers are recalling products in this country and at considerable costs
So if your reading this review Sony, this is your chance to sell your name by acting in good faith . This may excel your rating further in the market of electronics .
Perhaps by providing each customer with a new and tested model FOC may be one option.
I am also puzzled that Sony do not have an E-Mail contact for such problems?
