Light-weight
Build quality
Good shot capacity per charge
Stock design
Air arms distribution problems.
Otherwise nothing to speak of...
I went to my local airgun dealer (In Essex, U.K.) last Tuesday to pick up my new Air Arms S400 Classic .22, with a growing feeling of concern. This was the third rifle sent from the Air Arms factory with my name on it, as the other two had arrived at the dealer's with damage, apparently caused during transit. The dealer had rejected the first two weapons before I got to see them, and 'had a word' with the manufacturer, but I was increasingly doubtful about all the good reports I'd heard relating to Air Arms build quality.
I really needn't have worried.
My rifle was fitted with an Air Arms silencer and a Hawke Pro-Stalk 4-14x50 scope as I have aspirations of future Hunter Field Target competitions (Hopefully.) The combination also really looks the part, but let's not be so shallow....
Close inspection proved that my doubts about quality control were unwarranted.
The design and finish of the stock, is both well thought out and executed, with the revised checkering pattern on this latest version, asthetically pleasing and effective, with the inclusion of a checkered panel on the bottom of the forward end. Very helpful for some of the grip and stance techniques demanded by HFT these days.
The quality of the metalwork blueing was faultless, as you'd expect from a top manufacturer. Even the factory supplied sound moderator looked in harmony with the rifle, rather than the 'bolt-on tin can' appearance of so many after-market units at the moment.
At this point I confess that this is my first Pre Charged Pneumatic.
The S400 took just 7 shots at 30yards, to walk my pellets from the bottom of an A4 sized target, to my zeroing mark in the top left hand corner. I put the next 10 pellets (Air Arms Diablo Field) through the same hole. Impressed I was! This respect grew as I managed over 90 (at least, but I lost count) consistant shots from the single charge of air.
The standard factory trigger setting was not to my liking, but just a few minutes with a 1.5mm hex key, produced a perfect weight and feel from the fully adjustable two stage unit, adjustment of which is clearly explained in the user manual.
The S400 is great value for money, especially compared to current multi shot rifles, light, accurate and well put together. You really can't go wrong. Just check the gun when it comes out of the box as delivery people treat them as footballs.
