Good Points

Great value for the price
Well finished, solid rifle
Nice enough stock (no hand checkering though)
Great adjustable 2 stage trigger
Consistent and accurate, no power curve
Very powerful @28ftp
Looks nice in my opinion

Bad Points

It's not light but not too heavy either
Loud, if that's a concern to you.
Stock could have better checkering and walnut would be nice.

General Comments

Well, I've had my BSA Hornet for several weeks now and I'm most impressed so far. Mine is a single shot .22 rifle length FAC shooting at about 28ftp w/JSB Exacts. It took me a while before I finally made the decision on which rifle to buy but I have no regrets with choosing the hornet.

I was a bit nervous at first because of the lower purchase price when compared to other PCP's but now that I have used it for a while I have no concerns, it shoots as good as any other PCP, lets just hope it's reliable for the long run. I'll try to update this review if anything goes wrong down the track. So far so good.

My opinion is that it's a bargain for Australian airgunners looking for a PCP that wont break the bank. This rifle is 1/2 to 1/3 of the price of most of the other precharge pneumatics available in Australia, which means you can get fully kitted out with tank, adapter and scope for less that the price of just the rifle alone in some other makes and models. I think that just comes down to dealer mark up in Australia though as when you compare the price of the hornet to rifles such as the S400 in the UK and USA they are are pretty much the same price as the hornet, but not the case here.

It's as accurate as you could hope with good quality pellets (I shoot JSB's in mine). The cocking system takes a bit of concious thought when you first start shooting it but once you've shot for 5mins it's second nature and quite a good system. I use mine for outdoor metallic silhouette shooting and hunting and the cocking system works great for me.

The rifle balances really well in the offhand position, and thus is pretty comfortable in all the other positions but it would perhaps be fiddly if shooting multiple shots from the prone position, but I don't shoot multiple shots from prone. On the bench it's fine. I don't notice the weight and infact find that it helps in steady offhand shooting. The stock fits my frame well (I'm 5'10"). My barrel doesn't touch the cylinder like some people have noted, I don't know if I just got lucky with that or if BSA have rectified it.

Overall, I think for the price it can't be beat. Yeah sure you can spend 2-3X as much and get a nice walnut stock and some nice rifles but when it comes down to it this rifle will shoot as good as the rifles I've compared it against at the club and it looks good enough in my books. Nice consistent shooting with the regulator too.
I'm pretty happy with it.

Hi Steve, addictive hobby isn't it. In answer to your question, this is my first PCP. I was going to get a springer for hunting and plinking (R1,R9 or HW97) but ended up visiting and joining my local shooting club, so I ended up buying the PCP to be a bit more competitive in air rifle silhouette (which is a load of fun). I'm not saying you can't be competitive with a springer, but "I" think it may be easier with a PCP-at least for me. I can hit 22lr shell casings at 45m 9 times out of 10 off the bench with the hornet-it really is that accurate with the right pellets (JSB!!), I'm not sure I could do that with a springer but then my experience with springers is limited to chinese/gamo springers, not good quality springers like the Weihrauch etc. I can certainly recommend a PCP if you can afford it-they are superb. In Oz you really only have a handful of options for PCP and good quality air guns. These places are Victorian Arms in Melbourne (BSA dealers), Beeman Australia in Brisbane (HW, Beeman, Air Arms) or Hermann's Sporting Supplies in Victoria (FX air guns). Hope it helps. If you really are keen then I can certainly recommend a PCP. Cheers.

just me again, yeah i have a weihrauch hw97k .177 its a lot of fun to shoot but keep reading these reports on pcps shooting 1/2 to 1" groups at 50yds,there's no way im getting anything close to that with my rifle and i've had lewis at beeman put a maccari kit in for me.Do you find the hornet to be that much louder than your springers as i've been looking at the FX range with the adjustable power levels and at 12ftlbs im wondering if its gonna be roughly the same report. Thanks again ...Steve...

Yep, much louder that a springer IMO. Really little difference to a 22lr shooting standard velocity ammo. What the report would be at 12ftp I'm not sure on as I have never fired a 12ftp PCP. I can turn the hornet down to around that level also by removing the back panel and adjusting the hammer spring with an allen key, but yet to give that a go. I'd love a HW97 or R9, keeping an eye out for a good secondhand one, but may pluck up the funds to get a newie also. Ideally secondhand though just for plinking. Hope it helps.
