Good Points

Powerful yet compact and lightweight
Quality of images, colour definition and adaptability to different shot types.

Bad Points

Menu options not always that easy to find as there are so many!
User guide doesn't always lead you by the hand to find what you need, which is very frustrating - when you know it can do something, but can't find out how!

General Comments

The Coolpix 8700 is everything I've ever wanted in a digital camera. It's size makes it easy to take with you everywhere, and with 8 mega pixels, you'll always get a fantastic quality picture.

For close up still life photography, good colour definition can be difficult to achieve, especially with darker colours. Saturation control seems to be the key here, and setting it to +2 has definitely made a difference.

The manual setting allows great flexility and you feel like you have a full blown SLR in your hands. For the keen amateur not wishing to worry about apertures & speed settings, the pre-programmed settings assist for special conditions like sunsets, backlight portraits or firework displays!

The body of the camera is arranged well, and I particularly like the ability to turn the screen in many directions, meaning no more lying on the floor trying to see through the viewfinder for those arty shots!

Not being an SLR means you are limited in terms of filters etc, although there are some which are compatible and at the price, I would say this is the best compromise you will get.

I haven't been disappointed (even if I have been frustrated at times!) with the pictures I've produced. It's fun, easy and well worth the money.
