General Comments

The gun is a .177 cal. I got the Diana P5 Magnum Air Pistol for $166 plus S&H and that was the best price I found, by a bit. Good looking gun, a bit long but I don't really mind. Hits hard for a pistol. Actual chrony tests; at least 5 ft. lbs. and the best (for pellets that I had to test with) 5.92 ft. lbs. with Beeman Siver Bears. Actual average velocity with the Silver Bears was 613 fps. So the gun should be quite close to advertised velocity of 700 fps. If you were to use the RWS Hobby pellets at 6.9 gr. or the Beeman Laser at 6.5 gr. you should get real, real close to the 700 fps. mark as the Silver Bears again were at 613 fps. and weigh 7.1 gr. I did give the gun a coating on the spring and typical lube points with Beemans Metal 2 Metal paste and that made significant improvments in ease of cocking and smoothness of operation. One shot kills on big, fat pigeons out to 50 feet. Silver Stings were shooting clean through at similar distances. Crow Magnum pellets hit hard. Sliver Bears excellent also and a bit flatter trajectory if you shoot far. Give the gun a little while to settle in, settle in and smooth out. Try Metal 2 Metal paste or some other appropriate tar etc. and the gun makes a nice leap in performance and ease of use.

Could you please specify exactly where you applied the metal 2 metal lubricant as I am pretty new to air gunning and just recently bought a P5 as one of my first ever air guns. I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.

You could apply the lube to any of the joints/pivot points. The detent (the large ball bearing below the transfer port/chamber area. One of the most benificial areas is directly to the spring. Do not put any into the transfer port itself to avoid deiseling! Remove the stock and you will be able to look at the bottom of the compression tube and see the spring. Sparingly apply a light coat to the the spring trying to get the grease down into the spring so it glides more smoothly and faster when the trigger is pulled. I also tried the best I could to get some on the safety catch because mine was difficult to get the safety off and that also smoothed out nicely. Any more questions feel free to ask, I'll answer the best I can or try to direct you to some one who can.

Hey DualMag Mike, Great review... Where did you purchase the Diana P5 for $166 + shipping? I'll buy it tonight! Thanks..

  5. Dual Mag Mike Rank: Major on 15th Dec 2005

Midsouthshooterssupply.com. They also had the best price around by a good margin on the RWS 54. $460 and at the time I ordered it shipping was free!!

Thanks for the info. What a coincidence as I finally found (after nearly two hours of searching) and purchased the pistol for the exact same price ($166.75) at dnrsports.com. I thought for sure this was where you got yours! Shipped from PA, it's supposed to be here (WV) on Monday. Any clue on where to get a cheap simple zip-up case for this 18 incher?

Sorry you had to do such a long search. I answered as quickly as possible, I am glad you got a good price. One thing about bargain prices, if any gun is purchased at an unauthorized dealer the manufacturer can refuse to do warranty work! I am not really positive that either of these stores are authorized or not. As far as the case goes you could start looking at your local stores (KMart, Sports Authority, Model's etc.) or any of these same stores online. By the way quality pellets such as Crosman Accupells, Beeman FTS or JSB Exact give great groups (i.e. < 1 1/2 in.) out to at least 30 feet.

Hey, Dual Mag Mike, thanks for the info. You said to remove the stock to reveal the spring. Is this as complicated as it sounds? I've never worked on an airgun before and would hate to screw my P5 up.

Again, thanks for the info re: pellets, etc. We did get a great price; let's chaulk it up to our great surfing skills & persistance! The warranty card I mailed in asked for the name of the dealer so I expect they'll let me know if there's a problem. Couldn't find a case locally but today I'll be driving from WVa to Detroit and will be passing right by a Cabela's outlet in Dundee, Michigan. Maybe they'll have a case for a ThompsonCenter pistol or something. This is one giant pistol!

Not at all. You will not really be getting into the gun at all just removing the stock to reveal the spring and lube points. 4 screws in all. 2 that hold the grips on and 2 by the trigger. The 2 that hold the grip do not really even hold the stock to the action but hold the grips to the frame. It might make it a bit easier to see one of the 2 screws that hold the stock on if you remove the grips but it is not essential. The 2 screws that hold the gun, "together" are located in front of and in back of the trigger. The first 2 screws immediately in front of the trigger are the adjustment screws for travel and pull weight. The last screw, the one nearest the muzzle is one of the screws that hold the frame to the action. The second screw is located behind the trigger at the very back, bottom of the trigger guard. The screw is located inside the hole at a slight angle. Get a flash light and look up in there and you will see it. Both of the screws are slotted screws. Not hex or Phillips. Pull those 2 screws out, give a light pull (actually the whole stock is likely to just fall right off) and there you have it. Look to the underside of the action and you will see glimpses of the spring. It will not be full exposed due to the constuction of the gun but you will see coils here and there. Reverse the process to reassemble.

I went to dnrsports.com and they only offer what they are calling the "5M", not the P5 Magnum.

Great post and commentary here. Thanks everyone. I called RWS/Dynamit Nobel Support in the U.S. at 201-767-1995. These guys are the factory servicers for the P5 Magnum. On specific questioning, both outlets mentioned here (MidSouthShootersSupply.com and DNRSports.com) are authorized distributors of this gun, and RWS Support will honor your warranty if you purchased from these distributors. I went with MidSouthShootersSupply.com, and the gun was $158. I bought some pellets and fast shipped it (2 days), the total was $199. Not bad! One problem is that both outlets' web sites seem to misname the gun by referring to it as the 5G model. I asked the RWS Support guy and he said this confusion is VERY common among distributors, but that the 5G is no longer made. He could not be sure it was no longer SOLD, however. To be sure I was getting the right gun, instead of ordering on the web I called MidSouthShootersSupply.com and ordered over the phone, and I made sure the order specified a gun that says P5 Magnum on the barrel, and that it has the Fiber Optic sights (the 5G does NOT have such sights, and this is one of the only ways to distiguish the two guns, per the guy from RWS Support). So far the gun is great! It is far more accurate than I am (which is not hard to be!). I needed a gun to get rid of pigeons that have camped out on a rental house (I have tried every other method, and these air rodents keep coming back). This gun is plenty quiet as folks here and elsewhere on the web have stated. It's also not a rifle, so I am able to haul it out & get off shots without unduly scaring the neighbors. I bought a sample pack of RWS pellets (100 each of the MeisterKulgen, Hobby, SuperDome, SuperPoint, and SuperHPoint pellets). I find the Meisters hit hard, which makes sense as they are heavier. My best groupings seem to come with the Hobby and SuperPoint (a pointed pellet); the worst with the SuperHPoint (hollowpoint). I bought some "Hunting" pellets from Crosman (hollowpoint) and was not as successful with those, but they seem heavier and hit harder than the RWS SuperHPoint. Strangely, the SuperPoint (pointed) pellets will go right through, without dropping straight off (unless you have better aim than I, of course, and hit them in the right spots). It would probably be better in most cases to use a heavier, flatter pellet, or a hollowpoint pellet. But pigeons are very soft, so the hollowpoint might not expand much on "impact". I am a totally beginner shooter, a newbie, but in target shooting was able to get 1.5 inch groupings at 30 feet, which I find to be nothing short of amazing for a pellet pistol with no scope. This gun is not scopable without major customizations. The fiber optic sights are great. I thought they would just be a gimmick, but they actually improve my aim. I find that my accuracy improves greatly when I aim for a smaller object or target, as opposed to a larger one. My experienced shooter friend said this is true for most people and guns. I have had no problems with the safety that others have mentioned, nor with the trigger. The cock action works great, although it's tough - someone mentioned carpal tunnel and I thought they were joking, but now I understand what they were talking about. I'm now building muscles in my left hand that have not been used in years, or perhaps ever! I like the 2 stage trigger as well. I hope to keep this quality gun for years.
