Good Points

Ayamonte is a traditional picturesque Spanish town which, I am told, is around 350 years old. There are many fantastic places to eat and colourful weekly markets for fresh fruit, veg, meat and fish. The locals are extremely friendly and the sandy beach on Isla Canela (a small beach and golf resort attached to the town via road bridge) is 5 miles long with parts of it stretching alongside the protected land which apparently attracts birdlife from Africa. The other way there is quite a grand marina with restaurants and shops. We had a fantastic time there and hope the area stays as unspoiled as it is today.

Bad Points

The only thing I would say is during september time it can get a little windy, which can bring in a few jellyfish, making swimming a little tricky. The rest of the year the breeze is a godsend as the temperatures get pretty high. You also really need to hire a car to explore the area as public transport in the more remote areas of the countryside is not brilliant.

General Comments

Costa de la Luz, Ayamonte - Ayamonte gets the best of both Spain and the Algarve (being only a few minutes over the border from Portugal) It has maintained a sense of the real traditional Spain. Inland you will find picturesque villages to explore and of course there all the cultural attractions of Seville only a bit over an hour away. You may need to get a bit of Spanish under your belt before spending time in this area although some of the local people can get by in English.
