General Comments

The very, very best thing Discovery did on this cruise was to stay in St. Petersburg for three nights. That's why we were there - not many cruises do that and this city is a gem.

Our journey to Hawich, which I last visited in 1949 to sail to Holland on what must have been the first school trip abroad after the war, took about four hours from NW England, via M56, M6, M1 and M25. We arrived at the dedicated car park in a downpour, the only rain we had for 12 days!

Boarding was simple after a wait in line, and the cabin was a nice surprise and better than we expected in an old ship. Very well planned and with plenty of storage space. The ship generally was clean and well presented, but really showed it's age in the lack of walking deck space - 18 times round a small section above the Lido to do a mile, and in the low ceilings in the dining room.

The food was a mixed bag of mediocre and quite poor. There seemed to be signs of penny pinching in the quality of ingredients and poor cooking. Chicken in red wine was two chicken legs that had been blackened in a "wine" marinade that had long boiled away but still left the chicken underdone. Tenderloin of pork was so tough it was impossible to cut. Choice of breakfast cereals in the Lido was very limited and the cooked food greasy. And no grilled tomatoes!

We and many others aboard thought that the two lecturers were of a poor standard. The dance troupe were good and hard working, they had to be as there was no other entertainment on offer. Penny pinching again. The ships staff were excellent and we had the finest cabin steward afloat.

Dicovery is a small company with one ship. They did seem to be struggling to match the quality of other lines we have sailed with, seeming to be somewhat amateur in their operation. But we had a fatastic time in St. Petersburg in a heatwave in May. We can forgive Discovery of her faults a lot for giving us that.
