Good Points

Very addictive, loads of gameplay, good online support, serious fun for one or more players.

Bad Points

The options menus are confusing to use, the player huds are ineffective. Graphics are a bit questionable in places (but it`s old).

General Comments

Tom Clancys Ghost Recon is arguably superior to it`s sequel, there's no mistaking this game as a benchmark amongst the Tom Clancy series. Perhaps even the majority of tactical warfare sims on Xbox fail by comparison. Graphically it's not that impressive, looking distinctly outdated. Even the engine feels slightly sluggish when you're moving around. What makes this game great is it`s sheer range of playability & the fact it's rewarding. Ghost recon opts for strategic gaming options as well as action. You don't have to be a hardcore warmonger to appreciate some of its aspects but it definitely helps if you're a first person shooter fan. In single player campaign - You control (up to) 6 soldiers through 15 missions, sometimes split into two teams. Sounds complex but it's simplified by a management system throughout. As you progress through the game - you earn additional soldiers for use who possess unique abilities & weaponary. In comparison with Ghost Recon 2, the 400m x 400m landscapes (maps) are more baron, generally giving the game and it's areas a large feel. The enemy troops are also few and far between but this adds tension, especially when they suddenly appear thick `n fast. There are several objectives to complete on each mission. These might range from straight firefight to covert hostage rescue using nightvison goggles. Some of the guerrilla warfare missions boast excellent level design with buildings to explore & windows to shoot from. Ghost Recon is very atmospheric and makes great use of sound. My criticisms - the radar you're equipped with isn't very user friendly or reliable. Having to switch to main map in order to spot enemy positions all the time becomes irritating. You have to do so because one round from any hidden enemy sniper's enough to kill you. Great as far as realism's concerned but not that much fun in a game. Also, if you're playing multiplayer, it`s very easy to lose team mates (they're not on your radar hud either). All these things have been addressed in Ghost Recon 2 but additionally, there are things from this game which the sequel lacks. There's so much gameplay here, this game will probably last for weeks, maybe months. Its also addictive. what makes it the essential Xbox purchase is the fact it`s now a budget game and second hand copies are also widely available. If you're looking for a realistic combat sim, this game or any Rainbow Six game sets standards.
