I am a Philips fan, having always found their products dependable (I have owned most things from radio alarm clocks (1982 and still going strong) to TVs (had one for six years and upgraded for no real reason to a Hitachi which required no end of repairing from the moment the guarantee ran out), so I had no hesitation in making this my 1st DVD recorder. Especially at the £169 I paid Amazon.

Aesthetics. Looks good sitting on the stand between my SkyPlus box and Sony TV.

Features. Does exactly what it says on the cardboard box, although I can't comment on problems with using +R discs as I have only used +RW up 'til now.

Minor niggles. The manual is poor. I can't believe the number of multinational corporations who seemingly can't be bothered to employ a native in the world's one true international language, to tell me how to use their product. I'll do it guys! And in Philips case, for less than the fee paid to the muppet employed to draw the 'user friendly' Phil.

Opening the tray has been known to cause cramp in my thumb. And when it finally DOES open, it invariably closes again in the struggle to cope with the backed up 'open/shut' commands.

I regularly back-up Sky progs to DVD (especially The Simpsons for my kids) and the finished discs are a bit hit and miss with my Toshiba player, although they work fine on the thirty quid Yamada 5200, which I'm convinced would play a coaster if I jammed one in there.

All in all, I'm a happy bunny, having also connected a VCR as input and transferred a lot of (non-copyright protected) tapes with no loss of clarity. Looks like I'm the lucky one, bearing in mind the number of people who seem to have so many problems with this piece of kit.

Definitely recommended.
