General Comments

After reading lots and lots on the Mitsubishi FTO I went out today (yes as I type) and put a deposit on one. M plate GR in silver, 17" 5 spoke alloys with nice tyres, cd, air etc., race pipe and filter (swayed it perhaps), no tax but 10 months mot so now uk spec (not sure on pipe though), 65k miles for 3995 british pounds. Got shown all the specific inspections points, panel alignment, uk specific mods (fog light), it even has the original "flag light" holder in off side front wing!
So cant wait to collect it!
Points to remember. Sounds like a bag of nails on start up (24 valves all asking for oil), if it rattles for more than 20 seconds walk away, air con MUST be run properly rweekly or it packs up and get that cam belt changed whichever you buy regardless of history and it will last forever.
If anyone is interested try jap sports in Thurmaston, Leicester. No workshop but, funnily enough, a few local who specialise. They know their stuff!

was wondering if anyone with the knowledge could tell me what to look out for regarding buying one of these babies, got about £2500-3000 to buy one of these puppies? can i get a decent one for this price?

  3. 6316 Rank: Sergeant on 10th May 2005

Well I'd like to think I know what I am talking about! lol The FTO GR and GX vary between about £2,200 and £3,000. Of course these edition vary between 1.8l and 2.0l. The best FTO would be the GPX, Mi-Vec. It has a v6. These vary between £2,800 and £4,500 depending on the condition! There are a fair few around, you have to be careful for people lying about the engine too. Some people will tell you they have Mi-Vec engines when they clearly do not ;) Good Luck Finding one.

Umm, not to sound stupid but is there a way to tell the engine is in fact a mivec, (apart from looking at the log book?)

http://www.mitsubishi-fto.org/dawn-spec/gpx/i/engine_bay02.jpg = Mivec Engine. http://www.mitsubishi-fto.org/steve/lucifer/i/engine_overview.jpg = Normal FTO Engine You can see the difference ;)

  6. nadeembutt786 Rank: Lance Corporal on 12th May 2005

LOOKS SEXY AS EVER THOUGH THE MIVEC DOESNT IT? NOW SOMEBODY'S PUT A SPANNER IN THE WORKS AND TOLD ME TO GET A CELICA INSTEAD OF A MITSU, OPINION GUYS?

  7. Dazlawson Rank: Lance Corporal on 12th May 2005

How many Celicas do you see against FTO? Need I say more. Got mine today and over the moon with it. Tiptronic serious fun and it dont half go when you wind it up! Need to get speedo calibrated as it now on 17" alloys (yes it has a mph speedo) but get overtaken with 120 mph on clock on dual carriageway so me thinks its a bit out. Buy one, try it. If you dont like it you will get your money back on re-sale. Love mine!

  8. 6316 Rank: Sergeant on 12th May 2005

Celica = Poor compared. Who told you to do that? I demand you walk up to them and poke them in the eye.....after getting out of your new FTO :P The FTO will probably be cheaper and better anyway.....

  9. nadeembutt786 Rank: Lance Corporal on 13th May 2005

just saw a celica, my goodness, disgusting, pick up was sickening, my 1.2c fiat punto's got more power than the celica.

  10. 6316 Rank: Sergeant on 13th May 2005

Yeah Celica's dont go the distance. You can't go wrong with a FTO, take my word for it ;)

thanks guys for all the suggestions, went to see a fto yesterday, was told that it a mivec engine and looked at the engine, wasnt a mivec, informed the seller and his response was "well *@~* off then if you dont want it". But to be honest i would love one but its just not a 4 seater at all, so the baby wouldnt fit in the back. Am now looking for a 406 coupe (waiting for insults) but thanks anyway guys.

    good luck ;)

Had my GPX mivec Fto nearly 3 years now & wouldn't change it for anything! The Impreza is a modern XR3i, If you drive a porsche your usually thought of as a bit of a yuppie etc. The FTO might not be quite as quick but much more reliable & turns more heads. With a stainless exhaust nothing sounds as good either. Join the owners club&try AON for insurance. I'm 35, full protected NCB paying under £400. 4seats and a decent boot too, What more could you want??

hey guys/gals just wondering if anyone could help me out with some objective advice? i'm currently looking into a new car and am having difficulty deciding whether to go for an FTO or a 300ZX, anyone got any opinions? particularly in reference to reliability and maintenance costs...?

Celica's bah my old Mondeo used to eat those. I have an Impreza WRX (I know what you are all thinking) but although it is quicker and holds the road like it's on rails (not quite in the Mit Evo league) I want an FTO. They just look so very sexy. Sort of Aston Martin(ey?) from the front. Anyone now of anybody who wants to swap? Power and pace for looks and curves?

  16. The Final Fury Rank: Sergeant on 13th Jul 2005

Just noticed the 'Impreza is a Modern XR3i' comment. Don't even put then in the same........ whatever. The XR3i was a bucket, awful Dagenham dustbin with all the power an old Tumble Dryer. The Impreza goes and goes and goes. Doesn't look as good as the FTO though (admittedly) and the shape is dated, but they are working on that.... but come on XR3i.........?? That's like saying that the Audi TT Quattro is a modern Beetle..........
