General Comments

I have had this dream of owning a Volkswagen Golf GTi Mk1 Cab since I was 18 it has taken me till im 41 to realise my dream due to family commitments (kids)

I bought the car off ebay for £1000 about three weeks ago, I have put some alloys on it, new roof and cd player, so it stands me at about £1600 now, (bargain) I live in Bolton Lancashire and I have to say you don't see many Golf softops up here must be the rain. I have never driven a car that poeple stop and look at with green eyes before.
I now want the traffic lights to go red so that I can teach the youthfull drivers of today in their kitted out cleo's, 106s, 206s and newer golf GTIs why the 80s where such a good time to grow up. I love the look on their faces I see through my rear view mirror.
I also have a new 307 (the wifes car) but the golf demands to be driven a real drivers car.
I am in no doubt that my spending on this car will get out of hand if im not carefull but I cant help myself, I'm now thinking of a respray, and an induction kit, and god knows what else. Any views on the induction kit would be helpfull.

hi guys ,it seems that teh GTi mk1 bug is a world wide, or rather, global phenomenan. i am from South africa and have owned a the gti mk 1 for the last 8 yrs. like the original author of the article, i am 41, and now wish to indulge my golf with some of the "fancies". my current mileage is 401950 kms with teh original motor. i have had countless offers to purchase, but replacement value is unrealistic. the model is an '84 rhd and i am curious as to how it differs from the uk model

I have a 1984 Mark 1 1.8 Golf Cabrio - I love her dearly but I've got to let her go *sniff* Can anyone give me a rough idea of what she's worth - dont want to get ripped off (and its gotta make me feel better about letting her go)

    I'm the 8th lady owner.

Sorry mate, but I would love to agree with you, but the only hot hatch that has stood the test of time from the 80's is the Vauxhall Chevette HSR. I love mk1 golf's - doesn't even need to be a GTi. I don't know why, but I just do. But a Saxo VTS would kill you off at the lights, depending on the driver; unless your car is modified.

You cant beat a old school golf the greatest.
Be nice to see more of them about these days.
I hardly see one anymore and when I do it usually ragged and sketchy looking.
Its good too see so many people have still got interest in them.
