General Comments

2 weeks before my finals, RBS sent me a letter stating that unless I returned my full overdraft amount plus an extra £30 for "charges" I would be taken to court. This was out of the blue and they were incredibly unhelpful when I telephoned to attempt to sort the matter out stating that I did not have the money currently as I was sitting exams; however I would get it to them as soon as possible. They demanded the money back within 10 days.

Previously RBS had charged me £800 in charges over a 3 month period for going over my overdraft limit whilst abroad (they did not try to contact me, either by phone or by email or letter). In my opinion they are an appalling bank with no customer focus, no understanding of students and worst of all I must have paid them well over £1,000 in fictional charges for the privilege.

Perhaps if you had kept in touch with your bank, or regularly checked your account you would have seen that you were spending money unnecessarily. I think they were very good to give you the money in the first place, even if you did have an authorised overdraft.

You must have had the money, to pay all the "charges" - I wouldn't have over £1000 to pay in charges, but then again I am lot more careful with my money and my account.

I have been with RBS for years, and they are very accommodating and sympathetic to your needs - they probably only tried this tactic as they were sick of trying to get hold of you - and couldn't as you were not even in the country. If you are looking for someone to blame, perhaps you should look a little closer to home, before blaming others!

In response to babraham I too have had an appalling experience with RBS while a student and would totally agree with the original poster. It probably depends on the area a person is from - some branches are simply more helpful than others and I suggest babraham that you have been extremely lucky! It is unfair to suggest that the original poster has been irresponsible with their money and the bank could not get hold of them because they were abroad, It is none of the banks business if their customer is abroad and it is not like it would be impossible in this day and age to make a phone call, send an email or even a text message! I had no word from them that they were closing my account either and I was in the country! I did check my balance before spending anything that day, and had around 200 pounds free. RBS went on to allow 5-6 switch transactions to go through and then charged me 30 pounds each for the privilege. They then closed my account because the charges had caused me to go over my overdraft! One day I go shopping and have a bank account, the following week I do not. In my experience of human nature if certain people have power they certainly abuse it and no doubt a few of these people are working in financial services! I also think it is a ruthless business designed to exploit the weak and is an empty enterprise producing nothing of value but living off other industries parasitically. But that is just my opinion!

In response to babrahams comment....... what are you talking about he should have kept in touch with his bank its not his responsibility. I dont believe for 1 second that RBS got fed up trying to contact him.......... THEY NEVER CONTACT YOU. I have had my mortgage with them for a year and they haven't sent me 1 letter the whole time. How can you say he is irresponsible with his spending even if he would have checked his account before spending it wouldn't have made any difference if you use your switch card the amount doesn't come off your balance (live every other normal bank do) they just let you keep spending then charge you. Accommodating and sympathetic are you having a laugh, the don't give a damn, they just realise they have made a mistake...... again and have a go at you to make up for it, and none of them even know what there talking about anyway. If it is just him being irresponsible then can you explain to me why RBS took my monthly mortgage Direct Debit payment from my account today 4 times..................... no, didn't think so.

In response to solvig - The switch payments that were taken were possibly the result of you using your card, ie entering into a legal contract to pay money to the recipient?
As for your account being closed, as a member of the financial industry and someone who has previously had financial problems, first of all you would have been passed to a manged account team who would have approached you a number of times to ask for the money you owed back. Secondly they would have offered you a structured repayment plan to pay back the money. Finally, they would have given you a months notice that they were terminating your service with the bank.
You do not have you bank account closed for you because of one shopping trip! This would have been after months, possibly years, of charges and missed payments and going overdrawn! It is rediculous to suugest otherwise. Why would your bank close your account when you still owe them hundreds of pounds?

Mortgage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A mortgage is the pledging of a property to a lender as a security for a mortgage loan. While a mortgage in itself is not a debt, it is evidence of a debt. It is a transfer of an interest in land, from the owner to the mortgage lender, on the condition that this interest will be returned to the owner...
