General Comments

Right from the start I have been disappointed with this Epson Stylus Photo R200, and frankly it's hard to find anything good to say. Perhaps I am just used to my previous HP printers (Deskjet 840C and 845C - both bought for the same money as the Epson R200 over 2 years ago), but the Epson R200 printer just does not match them in print quality at all.

When you want to use this printer you have to physically switch it on, at which time the computer recognises a new USB device connected (HP deskjets are recognised as connected even when they are off, and switch themselves on when you send a document for printing). What's more, the printer buttons are unresponsive - you have to press and hold hard to switch the printer on.

Next, the Epson printer software is slow to respond - if the printer runs out of paper, a box opens up and will not disappear until the printer has been reloaded and is half way down the next page!

As for print quality, this is very average. Text is slightly blurred, where my previous HP printers have been razor sharp, even on poor quality paper.

Lastly, and to add insult to injury, ink is used at an incredible rate. Sure, the printer has separate cartridges for each colour, but they tend to expire simultaneously (I mainly use the printer for printing letters and webpages), and at about 3 times the rate of the HP printer cartridges. I just bought a new set of colour cartridges and it cost me over $70! Fine if it wasn't for the fact that I can't have printed more than 50 web pages (i.e. limited colour) with them.

If I had my time over I would definitely buy a HP for the same price - this is poor in every way. I cannot understand why it is receiving good reviews - perhaps it is better than other Epsons (I have no experience of them), but take it from me, it is well behind HP in the same price range.

Don't buy this printer - you can do better!
