Good Points

Inexpensive, light, excellent menu and instructions.
Best quality is as good as original DigiBeta and the 4 hour quality is better than VHS

Bad Points

Can be temperamental - will not record on Imation DVD's for some reason. Also discovered that the finalised discs do not often play on other machines. When routed through the machine, TV broadcast quality can look too 'sugary sweet'.

General Comments

On the whole the LiteOn LVW-5005 delivers what it promises, an ability to handle a huge variety of different DVD/CD formats. It is light, easy to understand and has some excellent edit features for titling etc. Occasionally it fails discs - the Imation discs in particular - and most annoying, despite being 'finalised' I have found that other players often can't play the discs I've made. This is its most major problem. It is a bit 'hit and miss'.

   What this reviewer says is all true and more. I have recorded more than 100 DVDs with the Liteon LVW-5005 and most of them can only be read back on the same machine. The fact that it goes through all the motions of recording and when finished, nothing is there! is most annoying. Additionally, you cannot read or edit the recordings on a PC because it writes non-standard VOB files with the time info missing in spots or messed up. This is true even with the latest firmware updates from Liteon (as of 5/26/2005). If you want to copy, edit, or cleanup your recordings, DO NOT BUY THIS RECORDER. Paul Holliday

   I own a LiteOn LVW-5001 and it has been a headache since I bought it. The unit overheats and "freezes" half way through a movie. The company denies that the unit has an overheating problem, but when the components are cooled, the unit will "unfreeze" and perform. Overall, the performance is very flaky.
